Mae Hong Son town is a small and pleasant town
with its own distinct feel and culture. Visibly
different from the rest of Northern Thailand due to its
mix of people; Burmese, Thai, Shan, Muslims and
hilltribe minorities. All live together harmoniously
creating an interesting blend of cultures evident in the
architecture, food and way people dress. Mae Hong Son
has become part of northern Thailand’s standard tourist
circuit, with plenty of guesthouses, hotels and resorts
in the area, many of them catering to Thais.
However, much of the capital’s prosperity is due to
its supply of rice and consumer goods to the drug lords
across the border. The town’s population is
predominantly Shan. Several Karen and Shan villages in
the vicinity can be visited as day trips, and further
afield are Lisu, Lahu and Musoe villages.
Pai is located in Northern Tailand, about half
way between Chiang Mai and Mae Hong Son. In Pai, you can
enjoy a cooler and fresher climate than in the rest of
the country because it is about 600 m above the sea.
Pai is a very interesting town with a mixed population
(Thai, Shan, hilltribes people, foreigner). The
atmosphere is quiet and peacefull. So it is easy to
relax and just chill out. A lot of reggae lovers live or
come to Pai. Thus, they are some reggae bars and shops.
The city is small but the nightlife offers some goods
opportunities: bars, live music, concert, festival.
Around Pai, the nature offers a lot of possibilities for
outdoor activities such as trekking, rafting, rock
climbing, biking, hiking and so on. Other activities are
available in town, such as massage or cookering courses.
Pai has also 3 temples. It is a very good place for arts
and handicrafts. A lot of artists live in Pai because
they enjoy the creative atmosphere of the city.
