Krabi Travel Information


Geography
Krabi's mountainous physical geography is broken by highlands and plains on the mainland; the provincial administration also covers more than 130 islands big and small in the Andaman. Natural forest cover is chiefly mangrove and Cassia trees. Krabi's sandy clay soil conditions are perfect for a variety of agricultural products, including; Rubber trees, palms,oranges, coconuts, and coffee The Krabi River flows 5 Kilometers through the city and falls into the Andaman at Tambon Pak Nam.

There are other streams as well: The Klong Pakasai; the Klong Krabi Yai; and the Klong Krabi Noy; these have their source in the province' shighest range of mountains, the Kao Panom Benja.

Present Day Government
Krabi is divided into eight districts: Muang(Krabi Town), Kao Panom, Klong Tom, Plai Praya, Koh Lanta, Ao Luk, Lam Tap and Neua Klong.

Size, Location and Boundaries
Krabi is on the Andaman Sea coast west Thailand,between 7'30" and 8'30" north latitude, and 98'30" and 99'30" west longitude, Total area is 4,709 square kilometers bounded thus:
Population
Krabi's estimated population, as of 30 July 1998,was 368,249.

Getting there

By Car
From Bangkok take Route 4, Passing Petchburi,Prajuab-Kirikan, Chumporn, Ranong, and Phang-nga Provinces before reaching Krabi; a total distance of 946 kilometers.

An alternate route is to take Route 4 to Chumporn and them turn onto Route 41. This leads through Lang Suan District of Chumporn to Chaiya and Wieng Sah Districts of Suratthaine; form there follow Route 4035, passing Ao Luk District of Krabi, back onto Route 4, and down to Krabi Town. This shortcut is just 814 kilometers, and is followed by the bus services from Bangkok.

From Phuket Take Route 402 to Route 4 and pass Tambom Kok Klay of Takua Tung District in Phang-nga; Tap Puhd District, Phang-nga; and enter Ao Luk District of Krabi; the total distance is 185 kilometers.

By Train
From Bangkok station take the train to on of the following station: Trang, Puhn Pin in Surathani Province, of Tung Song in Nakorn SriThammarat Province; from any of these places a bus may be taked onward to Krabi.

By air 
Thai Airways, Bangkok Airways and PB Airways operates frequently from Bangkok to Krabi.

Getting Around
Hat Noppharat Thara - Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park
Located in the area of Tambon Nong Thale, Tambon Saithai, Tambon Ao Nang and Tambon Pak Nam, Amphoe Muang Krabi. The National Park comprises:

Hat Noppharat Thara
A famous and very beautiful beach which is lined up with pine trees and coconut groves. Accommodations are available by calling Tel: 579-4842, 579-0529.

Koh Phi Phi
Its two islands, - called Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Le lie at some distance off the coast-line. The superb scenery of the islands includes high hills with jutting cliffs surrounded by beaches of silvery sand and emerald green sea, hiding underneath a bank of coral reefs and colourful maring life which are unrivalled in this whole wide area. Phi Phi Le offers many attractions; Tham Viking a large cave full of birds' nests as well as ancient colour paintings of Viking's boats, thus giving the cave its exotic name Ao Pi-Le and Ao Lo-Sa-Ma which are suitable for scuba diving, and Ao Maya a white sandy beach.
Accommodations are available on Phi Phi Don where ona village is situated.

Su San Hoi (Shell Cemetery Beach)
Current has been carrying a tremendous number of shells of various types to be imbedded near the seashore in the area of Amphoe Muang piling up large size of shell bed which is estimated to having an approximate age of 75 million years.

Tham Phet or Diamond Cave
This cave is located in the area of Amphoe Ao Luk having beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations especially when reflected with light one can see diamond spark like all-over.

Than Bokkhorani Arboretum
It is located in the area of Amphoe Ao Luk Some 46 kms. from the township area and is a very famous and well known spot of sightseeing.

Ko Lanta
This island has its status as Amphoe of Krabi, located 68 kms. from the township area. Most of the inhabitants have mixed blood between the Malayan and the water gypsy people.

Khao Khanap Nam
These mountains, walling the river in between, are somewhat the entrance of Krabi. It is accessible by a few minutes boat trip from the provincial landing. Beautiful caves worth seeing are also located there.

Ao Phra Nang
There are 83 small islands in this bay having a lot of swallows. Phra Nang Beach is located approximately 12 kms. from Krabi township area. A boat trip for a sightseeing tour can be made through Ao Nang Village.

Tham Lot and Tham Phi Hua To
These caves are located in Tha Yang Canal, Tambon Ao Luk Tai, Amphoe Ao Luk. The location is on the route to Laem Sak which is a 2 kms. laterite road where another 1.5 kms. access road branches off on the right hand side to Ban Tao Than where a 20 minute boat trip can be made to both caves. Inside the Phi Hua To Cave, prehistoric paintings can be seen and beautiful stalactite and stalagmite formations are located in Tham Lot, the cave where a boat can run through.

Climate
Weather in Krabi is typically that of the tropical monsoon, providing the province with just tow seasons, the hot season from November to April, and the rainy season from May to October. Moms winds, which change according to season, blow from the southeast, the southwest, and the northeast. Temperatures for the year range between 16.9 and 37.3 degrees Celsius; yearly rainfall averages 2,568.5 millimeters.
